An urgent maintenance issue at our Central Energy Facility will be affecting the ability to provide heating and hot water across the Stanford campus over the next several days. One of the facility’s three hot water generators is in need of immediate repair.
University staff are actively working to address the reduced capacity and minimize impacts, but we want to make you aware of what to expect in the coming days. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause our community.
What You Can Expect:
Lower temperatures in many classrooms and office buildings across campus. Please prepare to dress warmly in affected spaces.
Closure of campus swimming pools.
Student residences and dining halls are being prioritized, and heating and hot water availability in these buildings should not be affected.
Laboratory spaces with temperature-sensitive work also are being prioritized.
Libraries are not affected and will remain open.
Childcare facilities are not affected and will operate as normal.
Facilities directors and building managers will have information about individual facilities.
How You Can Help:
To assist us during this time, we ask that you limit your use of hot water and area heat where possible. Your cooperation will ensure that we can maximize the available resources while our staff works to restore full functionality.
We also ask that community members do not use space heaters or other portable heating units. These present a fire hazard and can overload individual electrical circuits.
For Employees:
Campus operations will continue, and many campus services need to be provided in person. Employees should plan to follow their standard work arrangements.
Thank you for your understanding and support as we work to resolve this maintenance challenge. We will keep you updated on our progress and notify you once normal operations resume.
